If you are interested in getting published, start with what you can do. You can find a publication that will publish you today - if not today, tomorrow. If not tomorrow, this week. If not this week, this month. You can make it happen! Set a goal, educate yourself, write something interesting and charge ahead.
Be a stickler for creatively crafted and carefully edited pieces prior to submission. Your edge will be your professionalism in a world gone mad with e-mail writers - those who have forgotten grammar and punctuation in favor of a simpler writing style.

Would-be writers often ask me, "How do I break in?" Here's a few quick and easy ideas that have worked for me and countless others. Have fun with this list - try a few of the ideas and see where this new venture takes you.
Stir the hornet's nest to create a buzz
Newspaper editors thrive on controversy. A reader's response that expresses a differing or opposing viewpoint is sure to capture his attention and likely to be published.
Letter to the Editor
Ever read an article that stirred you up? Write those thoughts and feelings down. Your response will capture the gleeful attention of the editor, especially if your view expresses a differing or opposing stance. Newspapers especially thrive on controversy, if you provide it in 500 words or less, you are sure to be published. - May 30, 2008 | View or add comments

America is in a “talking crises” today. From every direction we are bombarded with messages of despair and desperation. America is hungry for Good News.
There is little, if any, “fence talk” going on across the heartland. This nation was built on the concept of neighbors talking to neighbors across the fences and walking the talk delivering a bucket of corn or a basket of bread.

- How Do You Communicate?

This is the time of the year when my mail box fills with graduation announcements and wedding invitations. Yesterday I received the graduation announcement of Benjamin Wilson Kent from Forsyth Illinois. It's hard for me to believe that Benjamin whom I met as a little tyke about 12 years ago is graduating from high school. Where does the time go?
As I read Benjamin's graduation announcement I noticed that the school motto for Maroa-Forsyth High School was: Excellence and Pride. I couldn't help but think how Benjamin exemplified this motto in many ways. But one particular instance came to mind.

When God opened the opportunity for me to have a radio show, my first response was, "No way, I'm too busy already, life is hectic and full, how could I possibly do one more thing?" Now, 6 years later, I realize if I continue to be obedient to His calling, He will equip me and provide the means and the time.
The concept of moving outside the walls of the church is scary and intimidating. When the opportunity came for my show to move from a Christian station to a much larger secular station, my first thoughts were, "What if no one likes me?" Seriously, I was comfortable and felt I was doing good things for God's kingdom right where I was, so why should I move? It took the wise counsel of a family friend to help me see beyond my fears. He told me, no, he reassured me, that God would not bring me this far to let me fail now.

I have been speaking publicly for over twenty years. Yes, that means I started when I was 10! Well not really... it was more like 15 :) Anyway, when my speaking career began, I was on the payroll of a very successful entrepreneur and had the opportunity to travel the states encouraging the sales staff and revving up the energy in the packed auditoriums as any good Choleric/Sanguine would. Those were the days when I'd clock in at 9am and go home at 5pm except on the weekends when we were on the road, at that time it was nonstop until the boss hung up his hat for the night. I was paid well for a job well done.
Today I work out of my home (my office is the first bedroom on the right) and I seldom clock in at all, or is it, I seldom clock out? My family would say it’s the latter, but I’m working on that. Being self-employed has changed my perspective about what to charge. I must admit it is more what I talk about that has changed my view of “to charge or to bless.” In the corporate world I have no problem charging a fair wage for my services, if my service helps an individual to increase their bottom line then I charge accordingly. If I am presenting a faith-based talk, I look at it differently.
