Why Relevancy Matters

July 28, 2008

By Lee Warren

Years ago, I wrote a novel about a rock n' roll singer. I showed a sample chapter to an editor at a writers conference and he gave me two pieces of information—neither of which was easy to hear. First, he told me that the title was awful. Second, he asked me if I'd ever read a book called The Wind in the Wheat by Reed Arvin. I told him that I'd work on the title of my novel and that I hadn't even heard of the book he was asking me about. He told me that it was out of print, but that I needed to find a copy. I did find a copy and was blown away by what I read. Arvin is a former record producer who put his musical knowledge to work in his novel. The result is a masterful work of fiction in which you can actually hear the music as the protagonist sits at his piano and gently allows his fingers to flow across the keyboard.

As writers, how do we determine relevance to our audience? How do we translate what we have to say in a relevant manner?

I read a recent interview with Professor Huston Smith, author of “The World’s Religions.” In this interview, Dr. Smith makes the observation that “the best single model of the universe…is the most time-honored image in the entire Christian faith: the cross.” With a cross being a horizontal line intersected by a vertical line, Dr. Smith explains that this point of intersections is the meeting place between the spiritual realm which we cannot see, and the physical world in which we live with our senses. He contends that the cross, or the meeting place of both worlds, is at the center of the universe and always where we find God. What a cool thought!

Relevance Is In The Take-A-Way

July 1, 2008

By Linda Goldfarb

Just because I can talk, do I need to? This is a question I pose to myself on a regular basis, whether in a meeting, at church, at a social gathering, and yes even from the stage.

The first CLASS Seminar I attended, I found these words of Florence Littauer so wise, "You may have something you want to write or speak about, but do people really need to hear it?"

WOW! That was it... do people really need to hear it? Is it relevant?
