- Blogging from Your Passion
I've been a fan of the Kansas City Royals since my uncle from Kansas City came to visit family in Omaha, where I live, when I was a boy. After visiting with everybody, he'd grab a transistor radio, sneak out to my grandparent's front porch and turn on the Royals game.
I followed him.
He talked to the radio as if the players and manager could hear him. In between those conversations, he explained the game to me. His passion for the game was infectious and shortly after one of his visits, I went home and turned on the Royals game in my bedroom.
I've never stopped listening.
In 2004, when people were still asking me "What's a blog?" I began blogging about the Royals and it was easy to update because I knew so much about the team's history, players and fans.
I made some mistakes along the way. Early on, I was too much of a fan and therefore didn't show enough objectivity. I rarely thought about material that might interest readers. And it took me a while to figure out that my blog would be more experiential and story driven than analytical.
But even as I made adjustments, the blog began to get noticed.
Early in the blog's history, I was in the Royals locker room to interview a couple of players for a publication I write for, and a newspaper journalist recognized me because he'd seen my blog.
A couple of years ago, as I was about to interview another player, I started to introduce myself and he said, "I know who you are. You write Royal Reflections and you write for Baptist Press Sports."
I've also had contact with agents and broadcasters.
Last season, since I live in the Royals' Triple-A affiliate city, I applied for and was given the opportunity to cover the Omaha Royals for Examiner.com.
I received media credentials for the Omaha Royals' 2009 season and I just heard that I'll be given full credentials for the 2010 season, which means I'll continue to have access to the press box for every game, the camera wells, the locker room, etc.
None of this would have happened for me the traditional way. I didn't go to college for journalism. I did office work most of my adult life. But by writing a blog from my passion, doors began to open.
They can for you too.
