- What are the dates of the writers conference?
The conference will be held Thursday, October 17th through Saturday, October 19th.
- Where will the conference be held?
The 2013 conference will be held at Albuquerque’s First Baptist Church located at 4101 Paseo Del Norte NW in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The zip code is 87114.
- When does the conference start?
Registration at the conference site will open at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday. Pre-registration will be available at designated conference hotels from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The opening session will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday morning.
- What is the cost?
Full tuition is $495.00.
- Are there any discounts?
If you register and pay in full before August 16th you qualify for the Early Bird Discount. The Early Bird Tuition is $425.
- How do I register for the conference?
You may register by calling our office at 702-882-0638. We accept VISA, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover cards. Checks should be made payable to CLASSEMINARS and mailed to Post Office Box 36551, Albuquerque, NM 87176.
- Do I have to pay in full when I register?
You can register and hold your place by paying a $100 non-refundable deposit. All conference fees must be paid in full by September 15, 2013. Tuition balances paid after September 15 will be charged an additional $100. Please make all payments by calling our office at 702-882-0638.
- Is there a payment plan?
We are happy to work with you on a payment plan. However, conference fees must be paid in full by September 15, 2013.
- What if I can’t attend and have to cancel?
Cancellations must be received in writing 30 days in advance. Written cancellations received before the 30-day deadline will be promptly refunded, less a non-transferable $100. Cancellations received after the 30 days will be eligible for transfer to another CLASSEMINARS event but will be subject to a $50 transfer fee. Cancellations received within 72 hours of the event are non-refundable and non-transferable.
- Is there any kind of financial aid available?
We do not have scholarship funds or financial aid available at this time. If monies become available, information will be provided on the website about how to apply for financial assistance. Visit the website frequently for updates.
- What if I’ve never had anything published?
Then this is the place for you. At the CLASS Christian Writers Conference you will find workshops that provide skills and training. You will be encouraged and challenged by other writers and faculty members. There will be opportunity for you to meet with editors and industry professionals to discuss your projects and ask for their advice and counsel.
- Can I bring friends or family members?
Absolutely! If they want to participate in the full conference they will need to pay the full registration fee. All of our general sessions are open to the public and your guests are welcome to attend those programs. Guests may also attend the Friday night banquet by buying tickets in advance for the price of $25.
- What if I have a teenager that is interested in writing?
We have an exciting teen track that will be taught by Focus on the Family editor, Jesse Florea. The teen track starts Friday afternoon and ends when the conference closes on Saturday. The cost is $99. For teens who arrive with parents or chaperones earlier in the week we allow them to participate in the adult classes until the teen track begins at no additional charge.
- What airport should I fly into?
If you are flying into Albuquerque you will want to fly into the Albuquerque Sunport (ABQ).
- What about lodging?
Individuals are responsible for their own lodging. We have a list of recommended hotels on the website. We have negotiated special rates with most of these hotels. It is not necessary to use the hotels that we have recommended. Many attendees will choose to use other hotels.
- What if I want to come earlier or stay longer?
The hotels will honor our negotiated rates three days prior to the conference and three days following the conference.
- How do I get to my hotel?
If you are flying into Albuquerque and staying at one of the conference hotels you will need to check with your hotel to see if they provide shuttle from the airport. If not, you must provide your own transportation from the Sunport to the hotel. Taxis are available outside the baggage claim at the airport. Sunport Shuttle is another option. Their number is 505-883-4966.
- Is renting a car an option?
Rental cars are available at the Albuquerque Sunport. Most major companies have representatives in the baggage claim area.
- How will I get from the hotel to the conference?
Complimentary van transportation will be available from designated hotels to and from the conference site. You must reserve in advance for transportation. Please let our conference registrar know that you will need the conference shuttle.
- What about meals?
With the exception of the Friday night banquet, meals are not included in the conference tuition. We have arranged for simple self-serve lunches to be available each day at a nominal cost. There are also a number of restaurants near the church.
The hotels that we have recommended all provide some type of breakfast. There are a number of restaurants in close proximity to these hotels.
On Friday night we will enjoy a special conference banquet. This banquet is included in your registration. If you are traveling with a spouse or friend and wish to buy additional tickets for the banquet, they will be available at the cost of $25/person. If you have special dietary needs or need vegetarian meals please contact us no later than October 1st.
- How should I dress?
The weather in New Mexico in October can be unpredictable. If you get cold or hot, you may want to bring clothes with a removable jacket or sweater so you will be prepared. Nights can be chilly; we recommend that you pack a jacket for evenings. Remember to bring comfortable shoes.
In respect for our host church, we ask that you wear nothing too low, too high or too tight.
We suggest that you visit a weather website such as www.weather.com and search by zip code 87114 to aid you in pack appropriate clothing.
- What should I bring?
Bring your Bible, notebook and pens, copies of manuscripts you want to share with editors, business cards, and anything else you may need while at the conference. Laptops are optional. Power outlets at the church are limited. If you choose to bring your laptop please bring an extension cord or power strip. We also suggest that you bring a flash drive.
- Will I be able to meet with editors to pitch my writing project?
Editor/agent appointments are an important part of the writers conference. There will be ample opportunity for you to meet with our industry professionals.
- How do I sign up for editor/agent appointments?
Each registered attendee will have the opportunity to pre-register for two editor/agent appointments. The deadline to pre-register is October 1st.
- What if I miss the deadline to pre-register for editor/agent appointments?
You will be able to register at the conference.
- What is the difference between editor/agent appointments and coaching appointments?
Editor/agents are attending the conference to search out new clients or publishing projects. You will want to pitch your ideas and projects to these people. Industry professionals such as writers and marketing experts are available to give you advice. These are considered coaching appointments.
- Will I be able to schedule coaching appointments in advance?
If you have paid your registration in full by September 15th you are qualified to sign up for two coaching appointments in advance. The deadline for sign-ups is October 1st. If you miss the deadline you may sign up for one coaching appointment at conference registrations.
- What if I have something written that I would like to have reviewed? Can I bring it?
On-site manuscript critiques will be available at the conference. Bring your manuscript with you. Forms will be available when you arrive. Please review the guidelines on the website. Please follow the guidelines exactly. Walk-in critiques are $50. You will be paired with a critiquer who has the expertise you need to advise and inspire you. Another option is to have your manuscript critiqued before you arrive at the conference. Please visit our website for a list of conference critiquers and have your manuscript reviewed in advance. This will give you a chance to make the suggested changes and corrections and bring your manuscript all cleaned up!
- What is the conference book project?
Each year our attendees have the option to participate in our conference book project. This is a great opportunity for us to work together, build relationships, and produce a book. This year our project will be a devotional book. Attendees will bring a devotion that has been written following the conference guidelines. Each morning they will work in a small critique group to edit and polish their manuscript. At the end of the conference we gather all the submissions and publish them in an anthology book. For many attendees this is the highlight of the conference and provides writers with their first publishing credit.
- Do I need to bring a laptop?
It will be helpful to have a laptop for the book project. If you do not have a laptop, please bring a thumb drive with your manuscript on it so you can borrow a computer to type your final version. Also, please bring at least three hard copies of your article to use in your small groups. Guidelines for the book project are on the website.
- Are there computers and printers available at the conference?
We will not have extra computers available at the conference. There will be a limited number of printers that can be used to print conference related materials. Most hotels have business centers with computers that you can use to update stories, proposals, etc. They also give you access to e-mail and the ability to print boarding passes.
- Is there wifi access?
There is wifi available at the First Baptist Church. Most of the hotels provide wifi at no additional cost however; we suggest that you contact the hotel you choose to make sure.
- If I have books that I have written or contributed to, may I sell those at the conference?
You may feature your books in the Resource Center. If you wish to sell your books on site, contact firstname.lastname@example.org and request a consignment form. Remember, a 20% consignment fee will be taken from all sales. Consignment forms will also be available at registration.
- Will there be books by other authors and experts?
We will have a selection of the faculty’s books available at the CLASS CWC, as well as other books, tapes, and additional supplies to enhance your speaking and writing.
- What about gift items? I have jewelry, mugs, t-shirts, etc.
We do not encourage the sale of gifts items at the Conference Resource Center unless they are directly related to your writing ministry. For example, gift cards, plaques with your poems, etc. These items must be approved in advance.
- Is there anything I need to be concerned about coming to Albuquerque?
The altitude in Albuquerque ranges from 4900 feet to 6700 ft. At this altitude it is imperative that you drink plenty of water. Water will help counteract the effects of altitude sickness. Drinking water will be available at the church.
